A medical coder for nutrition and dieteticstranslates patient medical records into universal medical codes.These codes are used by healthcare providers and insurance companies to maintain accurate medical records and for billing.Medical coders may also act as a resource for other coding staff and review documentation to ensure it supports diagnoses, procedures, and treatment results.Here are some responsibilities of a medical coder:
• Review a patients medical records after a visit
• Translate information from medical documents, such as physicians notes, lab reports, procedures, and diagnoses, into codes
• Confirm treatments with medical staff
• Identify missing information
• Submit forms to insurers for reimbursement
• Analyze medical records and identify documentation deficiencies
• Serve as a resource and subject matter expert to other coding staff
• Use ICD-10 CM and CPT code books to convert text information into numeric codes
