The British High Commission, New Delhi, is part of the FCDO and is responsible for managing all aspects of the United Kingdomxe2x80x99s relationship with India. How we approach our work is important. The Trade Policy, Exports and Economics Section sits at the heart of the British High Commission network in India, operating across New Delhi and 9 regional offices, including Mumbai. The Economics & Finance team leads on developing the UK-India bilateral economic and financial relationship, providing direction, analysis and reporting, and engaging with key stakeholders in business, the UK government and the Government of India. The jobholder will be an important part of this team at a critical time for the UK and Indiaxe2x80x99s economic relationship when negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement will be underway.We are looking for an individual to play key role to advance UK objectives and cooperation with the Indian government on economic issues. The jobholder will enable UK-India policy cooperation on bilateral and global economic issues. The person will do this through strong stakeholder networks e.g. with Indiaxe2x80x99s Ministry of Finance xe2x80x93 and work with the Ministry xe2x80x93 as well as His Majestyxe2x80x99s Treasury, the UKxe2x80x99s Ministry of Finance xe2x80x93 to deliver major bilateral priorities, including visits from senior ministers and following up on the Economic and Financial Dialogue between the UKxe2x80x99s Chancellor and Indiaxe2x80x99s Minister of Finance, which will happen in September. The person will also produce high-quality briefing on India economic issues, as well as (subject to experience) analysis and reporting of economic changes and longer-term trends in India, including on development. This will be for a cross-government audience including Cabinet Ministers in London, the UKxe2x80x99s High Commissioner to India and senior UK and Indian business leaders. Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve: Economic policy
  • Build relationships with different parts of the Ministry of Finance, particularly the Bilateral Cooperation Division, Chief Economic Advisorxe2x80x99s Office and multilateral teams.
  • Develop relationships with key UK Government departments in London including Her Majestyxe2x80x99s Treasury (the UK Ministry of Finance), the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Department for International Trade xe2x80x93 to ensure a strong understanding of UK goals and priorities in India.
  • Drawing on this knowledge, deliver greater collaboration between HM Treasury and the Ministry of Finance, including through regular bilateral events such as the annual Economic and Financial Dialogue between the Chancellor of the Exchequer and Indiaxe2x80x99s Finance Minister.
  • Deliver new UK-India following on from Indiaxe2x80x99s 2023 G20 Presidency, supported by UK government programme funding for events, policy research etc.
  • Ensure successful implementation of agreements at the UK-India Economic and Financial Dialogue due in September, through strong relationships with relevant authorities in both the UK and India.
  • Deliver high quality briefing and (subject to experience) economic analysis covering key economic and policy trends in India, to inform senior UK government engagement in India.

Economics, International Relations, Politics). Candidates without the required educational qualifications but with strong practical experience will be considered. Essential:
  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience working on economics or economic policy issues, for example in government or the private sector, providing you with a general good level of understanding of macroeconomics, microeconomics, trade and key themes in the Indian economy.
  • Ability to analyse, explain and use data sources to produce evidence.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience Desirable:
  • Existing network of contacts with Indian economic policymakers, academia, the private sector, and think tanks.
  • Familiarity of working with UK organisations
