Responsibilities:As an animal nutritionist, youll need to:evaluate the chemical and nutritional value of feeds, feed supplements, grass and forage for commercial animals and petsformulate diets and rations to maximise growth, reproduction, health and performanceassess the relative nutritional and economic value of feeding systemsresearch the effectiveness of dietary regimesconduct animal-based studies and laboratory trialssupport agricultural consultants in their workliaise with producers and clients to understand their targets and objectives, and the specific needs of the marketmonitor feed formulations to meet quality performance and animal health standardsprovide advice on nutrition to farmers, other animal owners, veterinarians and government bodiesrationalise animal feed manufacturing techniquesexpand existing ranges of animal food products and develop new onessupport commercial teams in producing and launching new productscarry out sales and marketing strategies following the launch of a new productbalance growing consumer interest in quality with the need to develop competitive agricultural systemsmaintain expertise in nutritional trends and keep up to date with regulatory changesuse software to formulate diets, conduct research and generate reportsinvestigate nutritional disorders and the safe storage of feeds, often in conjunction with veterinary surgeons.Skills:an understanding of the scientific basis of nutritionfamiliarity with analysing data and writing reportsthe ability to conduct research in a safe, ethical and reliable mannerthe capability to formulate and communicate ideasthe capacity to form long-term relationships with customers and clientsan appreciation of the interdisciplinary nature of science and the validity of others viewpointsbusiness-management, time-management and personal-development skillsadvanced numeracy, IT and internet skillsdrive, perseverance, dedication and a willingness to work long hours.
