Job Description

Our vision moves beyond screens and pixels, creating a new reality aimed at bringing us closer together - whether that is scientists meeting on the surface of a virtual Mars or some yet undreamt-of possibility.We aspire to use our Mixed Reality technologies and platform, including both HoloLens and immersive Mixed Reality devices, to augment and improve the professional lives of workers around the world, empowering them to achieve more.We have an incredible opportunity for a motivated, experienced and professional 3D Technical Artist to join our growing team of designers, artists and creative coders.This position requires technical and creative expertise in the evaluation, creation, and optimization of 3D art and assets, and moving them at high levels of quality and performance to mobile platforms, esp. HoloLens.Strong technical art, programming, and 3D visual skills are required. Experience in game engines and 3D art is preferable. If you are not expert in Unity, you will need the passion and technical capability to become an expert quickly. You are highly-skilled in 3D art creation and optimization tools; you can code shaders; you have production-pipeline expertise (especially in Unity); and you have broader e2e app-design capabilities (concept/ideation, user-focused problem-solving, 3D app patterns).Additionally, you will provide technical reviews and guidance for best practices on performance and procedures for 3DArtists.The ideal candidate will be highly effective and positive in ambiguous situations, able to self-motivate to high performance, manage your time effectively and react quickly to changing requirements.Primary Responsibilities:Work with 3D artists to create high-quality, performant 3D assets.Provide optimizations for porting to mobile platforms, esp. HoloLens.Use PiXYZ, Simplygon, or other frame and rendering analysis and optimization tools.Create or modify shaders targeting mobile platforms.Do detailed performance analysis for apps.Get assets thru Unity (and other) production pipelines.Assess customer needs (especially with external Microsoft strategic partners) to problem-solve and implement innovative 3D design solutionsWork as part of a team (often across time-zones), for example working with other technical artists, visual/interaction designers, and engineers to design and deliver Mixed Reality apps and experiences.Demonstrate design and technical expertise across the end-to-end 3D design processCollaborate with design and fellow artists to build best practices andsolutions possible.Work in ambiguity while still delivering timely and high-quality results.Requirements:3+ years experienceas a Technical Artist, designing, developing, and shipping major game contributions in published games or entertainment market with critical acclaim.Deep knowledge of rendering pipelines,game engines and performance considerations; and asset optimization tools.You are expert in Unity production pipeline, can prototype in Unity, and are capable of working quickly in the prototyping phase and then delivering final, quality code that can be leveraged by others and shared open source.Extensive knowledge of CAD packages (AutoCAD) and 3D creation tools (Maya/Max//Zbrush/etc), and the ability to extend the capabilities of these packages via plugin APIs is preferred.Knowledge of PBR pipelines, shader authoring and surfacing workflows.You are also passionate about building 3D tools, toolkits, and documentation/guidance.Ideally you have working knowledge and ability to script in various programming languages; and proven track record of working with real-time engines (e.g. Unity, Unreal)You are comfortable working within an environment in which the goals evolve rapidly and technical and design hurdles need to be solved on the fly.BFA/MFA/Design and/or Computer Science degree, or comparable experience.Bonus:Knowledge and use or PiXYZ, RenderDoc, Simplygon or other frame and rendering analysis tools, and Simplygon.,
